The Fall 2025 issue of Middle Market Growth Magazine features an article from Fideh Samaha, Vice President, Business Development.
/ Middle Market Growth / In buy-side M&A, success isn’t just about finding the right opportunities; it’s about creating the right moment for a conversation to begin. For business owners considering a proprietary transaction, that moment needs to feel intentional, personal, and compelling enough to rise above the constant noise of the market.
That’s exactly what my team at Blue River set out to do when a spark of inspiration turned into a completely new way to introduce a client’s growth strategy to potential acquisition targets.
A Strategy Worth Hearing
Last spring, as I listened to the chairman of our client’s board outline the company’s vision for the future, it was everything you hoped for as a banker: clear, ambitious, and supported by a
track record that made you believe it could be done.
It wasn’t just a plan on paper—it was the kind of strategy that made you want to get involved. And I couldn’t stop thinking: If the right targets could hear this exactly the way I just did, they’d want to be part of it.
The challenge? You can’t exactly package a live conversational moment and send it out by courier. Or, at least, not in the traditional sense.
The “Message in a Bottle”
That’s when the idea took shape: produce a high-end, motion-enhanced video that captured the authenticity and conviction of the client’s message and deliver it directly— literally—to the desks of acquisition targets of interest.
We weren’t looking to send out another “Hope this finds you well” email. We wanted something tangible.
So, we built a sleek, physical brochure with an embedded screen. When opened, the video plays instantly, communicating:
• Who the client is
• What they’re looking to achieve
• Highlights of past transactions
• Where they’re headed next
The goal wasn’t to pitch. It was to paint a vivid picture of what a partnership could look like for the viewer’s organization and underscore why now was the right time to talk.
The impact of the video brochure wasn’t about the novelty of the technology. It was about the message and how it made the recipient feel.
We weren’t simply introducing our client; we were showing the business owner their own potential future. The messaging vessel just ensured they couldn’t miss it.
For owners used to fielding dozens of generic inquiries on a weekly (sometimes daily) basis, this approach felt intentional and personal. It stood out on their desk and, once they pressed play, the conversation had already begun.
Making It Happen
Creating the video was its own kind of transaction process. We worked closely with our client’s leadership team to distill their vision into a narrative that was both precise and inspiring. Every second mattered.
The production itself was cinematic but disciplined—high-quality visuals, authentic delivery, and
editing that moved the story forward without overcomplicating it.
And while the technology was impressive, the real differentiator was how it supported the strategy. The targets were carefully chosen. The message was tailored to resonate with them specifically. The delivery method was designed to feel exclusive, not mass-produced.
Was the embedded video screen a conversation starter? Absolutely. But that wasn’t the point. The point was connecting the right people, at the right time, with the right opportunity—and making that first touch so compelling that it created momentum.
Technology was the bridge. The destination was a meaningful conversation about partnership.
The Bigger Picture
In our work at Blue River, we focus on buy-side proprietary deal execution that aligns closely with our clients’ strategic objectives. That means going beyond the traditional sourcing process to present opportunities in a way that feels less like outreach and more like an invitation.
Sometimes that happens across a conference table. Other times it happens when a package arrives on your desk on a Tuesday afternoon and starts playing a story you can’t stop watching.
The medium will always evolve. The strategy—creating a moment of clarity and connection between two potential partners—will always be the core.
For other bankers and private equity professionals, the takeaway isn’t to rush out and order a stack of video brochures (though they do make an impression). It’s to ask:
• Do members of the target market truly understand the strategy and vision behind this opportunity?
• Have I given them a reason to lean in and picture themselves as part of it?
• Am I delivering that message in a way that cuts through everything else vying for their attention?
When the answer to all three is “yes,” you’ve gone beyond sourcing. You’ve created an opening, and in M&A, openings are where the real work begins.
The right story, told the right way, can open a door no spreadsheet ever could. And sometimes, the most effective deal introductions aren’t the loudest, the flashiest, or the most tech-heavy—they’re the ones that make the person on the other side stop what they’re doing and think, I want to be part of that.
